HELP STOP WEST NILE VIRUS!!

“JOIN THE SWAT TEAM” AGAINST WEST NILE VIRUS”

You can play a vital role in the prevention of mosquito-borne West Nile Virus on your property and around your home.

 Reduce Mosquito Habitat:

·      Do not allow excess irrigation water to stand pooled in the field.  Millions of mosquitoes can be produced in such water in just a few days.  The aquatic mosquito larvae die if deprived of water before they can develop into biting adults.

·      Drain any standing water.  Empty water from wheel barrows, tires, tarps, toys, buckets, cans, etc.  Remove from the yard any unnecessary items which may collect and hold water.

·      Change water in birdbaths, water troughs and wading pools at least every 4 days.

·      Do not allow water to stagnate in ornamental garden ponds.  Maintain and clean often.

Protect Yourself:

·      Use mosquito repellents that contain up to 35% DEET for adults and up to 10% for children 2 months to 12 years.  Visit the CDC website or consult your doctor for information on applying DEET to very young children.  Spray skin and clothing.

·      Cover up: wear long sleeves and pants for extra protection.

·      Avoid outdoor activity when mosquitoes are present especially dusk to dawn.

·      Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in unscreened structures

·      Seal doors and windows with tight screens in good condition.

Use Caution When Handling Dead Birds.

Dead birds should be turned in for testing to determine if West Nile Virus is present in Rio Blanco County.  Dead crows are usually seen about 2 weeks prior to humans or horses having the disease.  Please use the following guidelines to submit dead birds and do not touch them with bare hands:

·       Gloves, a shovel, or an inverted plastic trash sack should be used to pick the bird up.

·       Place the bird in double plastic sacks.

·       Collect only fresh birds (birds dead less than 48 hours).

·       Keep the bird refrigerated or frozen until drop-off.

·       Call one of the following agencies for dead bird drop-off and/or further information:

o       Colorado State Cooperative Extension Office 878-4093 or 878-3473

o       Paul Neilsen, Veterinarian, 878-5647
